Symptoms & Healing

Symptoms often include flashbacks or intrusive memories of the trauma, nightmares, and severe emotional distress when reminded of the event. People with PTSD may also experience heightened anxiety, hypervigilance (being constantly on guard), and avoid places, people, or activities that remind them of the trauma. It can affect how you think about yourself and the world around you. You may believe you are worthless, blame yourself or believe that others cannot be trusted. Emotionally, PTSD can lead to intense feelings of fear, irritability, anger, sadness, or numbness. These symptoms can disrupt daily life, making it challenging to feel safe, focus on tasks, or maintain healthy relationships (e.g., feel detached from others, cause strains in communication).

Healing from PTSD involves an integrated approach that addresses all aspects of trauma. Holistic interventions, including DBT and CBT can be beneficial in challenging negative thoughts and behaviors, and regulating emotional distress, which can improve relationships. Neurobiological techniques like mindfulness practices can enhance self-awareness and acceptance, ground you in the present moment and calm reactivity. EMDR and IFS therapy focus more directly on processing traumatic memories and understanding and healing different parts of yourself. Integrative therapy aims to support you in regaining a sense of control, safety, inner balance, and harmony.
