In-Person Couples Therapy in Toronto

Holistic healing to bring your minds, bodies, and hearts back into harmony.

At the Centre for Mind Body Psychotherapy, we help couples communicate with care, repair after conflict, and rebuild trust. We offer in-person couples therapy in Toronto.

Stop rehashing the same fight. Start finding each other again.

You love each other, but lately it feels tense, distant, or like every small thing turns into something big. Maybe one of you shuts down, while the other pushes to talk. Maybe there’s been a breach of trust, and you’re wondering if your relationship can recover. Or maybe you just miss how connected you used to feel.

Your body even knows the pattern now: your heart starts racing, you get defensive without meaning to, or you go quiet because it feels safer than saying the wrong thing. Then you think, “This isn’t the relationship I want.”

Underneath it, you both want the same thing: to feel heard, close, and safe with each other.

Couples therapy gives you a safe, structured place to try again. We slow things down, help you see the patterns keeping you stuck, and offer Gottman Method tools to help you communicate, repair, and reconnect.

What Couples Therapy Can Do For You

Most couples come to therapy because they want three things: better communication, less conflict, and a stronger connection. Our work together focuses on those outcomes.

Our couples therapists draw from the Gottman Method, IFS, EMDR, mindfulness and somatic practices to help you stay regulated while you talk. This means you get practical tools, take-home exercises, and real change.

At the Centre for Mind Body Psychotherapy, we use a structured approach that focuses on helping you move out of unhelpful cycles and into new ways of responding to each other.

Challenges We Commonly Support in Couples Therapy

When conversations turn tense or end in silence, we help you build tools to express needs calmly and feel more heard and less criticized.

If you keep replaying the same argument, we help you recognize the pattern, understand what’s driving it, and create healthier ways to reconnect.

If you feel more like roommates than partners, couples therapy can help you rebuild closeness, safety, and everyday intimacy.

Big life shifts like becoming a parent, forming a blended family, or moving can challenge even strong relationships. We’ll help you stay grounded as you navigate change as a team.

Blended family dynamics can bring up challenges around roles, boundaries, and loyalty. We also help families navigate parenting differences and build connection with greater understanding and cooperation.

Money stress can trigger conflict and resentment. We help you communicate clearly about finances with less blame and more clarity.

When physical or emotional connection fades, we create space to talk about needs safely and rebuild closeness step by step.

We guide you through the healing process after betrayal, helping you process emotions, restore safety, and decide together how to move forward.

When you wonder if you’re on the same page, in couples therapy, we help you explore your values, clarify needs, and make decisions together.

When anxiety, depression, PTSD, addiction, ADHD, Autism, trauma, or substance use struggles affect the relationship, we help both partners support healing, while protecting the connection.

When boundaries feel unclear, it can lead to resentment or burnout. We help you communicate your needs more effectively while maintaining connection and mutual respect.

Mind Body Approaches in Couples Therapy That Support Lasting Change

Rehashing the same issues or pulling away to avoid conflict often leads to escalating conflict and disconnection. We help you understand the deeper emotional feelings and needs driving reactivity and misunderstanding, and through a mind, body, and relational approach, learn healthier ways of relating so trust, closeness, and real connection can develop.

A structured, research-backed approach that teaches you how to manage conflict, build friendship, and create shared meaning.

EMDR is used when past hurts, infidelity, or trauma are impacting your ability to trust, stay present, or respond calmly in the moment.

IFS helps each partner recognize and soften their protective parts (like the critic, fixer, or withdrawer), so you can show up with more empathy and understanding.

CBT focuses on identifying unhelpful thought patterns and reactions that fuel conflict and replacing them with more supportive communication habits.

DBT builds emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness skills so you can stay calm and connected during difficult conversations.

These approaches encourage awareness of your body’s cues (the racing heart, the tension, the urge to retreat) and offer tools to regulate your nervous system in real time.

Addiction counselling addresses the underlying emotional, relational, and behavioural patterns that drive substance use, supporting lasting change through compassion, insight, and practical strategies.

Coaching for ADHD and autism spectrum disorder focuses on practical strategies for organization, emotional regulation, and daily functioning, while honouring neurodiversity and individual strengths.

Connect With an In-Person Therapist in Toronto

At the Centre for Mind Body Psychotherapy, our couples therapists provide in-person couples therapy in Toronto, using whole-person, mind body care so support reaches both of your thoughts, emotions, nervous systems, and the bond between you.

Our Approach

How Our Couples Therapy Works

Begin Your Journey Together

In the first session, we meet with you as a couple to hear your relationship story; what you love about each other, what’s been hard lately, and what you hope will change. This helps us understand your strengths, patterns, and goals as a team.

Share Your Perspectives

Next, each partner meets individually with the therapist to share personal history and how you experience the relationship. You can also complete the optional Gottman Relationship Check-Up questionnaire for a fuller picture of your connection.

Grow Back Into Connection

Then we meet together again to review feedback and set clear goals: improving communication, rebuilding trust, or feeling close again. Most couples attend 8–20 sessions, and progress happens best when both of you stay engaged in the process.

“Healing & growth happen when mind & body work together and you feel connected to yourself & others.”

Questions About Couples Therapy

Our clients often notice that this therapy feels different from the start. From the assessment process to treatment and take-home tools, couples therapy at the Centre for Mind Body Psychotherapy is structured and goal-oriented; not just talk therapy. Our seamless, step-by-step approach helps couples identify the specific areas that need attention, apply new communication and regulation skills right away, and see meaningful progress in a short timeframe.

This approach is also grounded in over 40 years of research with more than 3,000 couples. Developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the Gottman Method, is one of the most evidence-based and widely trusted approaches to marriage counselling and couples counselling in the world.

The fee for couples therapy in Ontario is $250 per 50-minute session. Payment is accepted by e-transfer or credit card and is due at the end of each session. Receipts are provided so you can submit them to your extended health or employer benefits if your plan covers marriage counselling or psychotherapy by a Registered Social Worker or Registered Psychotherapist.

Here are some of the ways couples therapy in Toronto can support your relationship:

Improved Communication: Couples therapy focuses on teaching active listening, assertiveness, and empathy skills so partners can express needs clearly and truly understand one another.

Conflict Resolution: Learn how to identify root issues and manage disagreements without blame or withdrawal.

Enhanced Intimacy and Emotional Connection: Rebuild closeness, express affection, and strengthen emotional and physical intimacy.

Increased Understanding and Empathy: Develop a deeper awareness of your partner’s experiences and perspectives, which fosters compassion and teamwork.

Changing Negative Patterns: Break cycles of criticism, defensiveness, or avoidance with practical strategies for repair and reconnection.

Rebuilding Trust: Create a safe space to process past hurts and re-establish security after betrayal or broken trust.

Navigating Life Transitions: Get support through major changes like becoming parents, dealing with struggles with your child, blending families, or managing career or financial stress.

Promoting Emotional Safety: Share openly and vulnerably in a judgment-free environment that encourages honest communication.

Strengthening the Partnership: Build on your relationship’s existing strengths and rediscover what brought you together in the first place.

Proactive Relationship Maintenance: Use couples counselling as a preventive step to strengthen your bond and avoid future breakdowns.

On average, Gottman Method Couples Therapy involves between six and twelve sessions. The exact number depends on your specific goals, the challenges you’re addressing, and how consistently you practice the skills between sessions. Some couples benefit from short-term support, while others choose ongoing couples counselling to maintain growth and connection.

Domestic Violence: Couples therapy is not recommended when there is ongoing domestic violence. Individuals in unsafe situations should seek immediate support to ensure safety.

One Partner Has Already Decided to Leave: If one person has made up their mind to end the relationship, therapy often cannot create change.

Secrets or Hidden Behaviours: Undisclosed affairs, substance use, or other secrets can undermine therapy. If the truth has already surfaced, we can help address the aftermath and work on rebuilding trust.

Seeking a Referee: A therapist’s role is to support both partners equally, not to assign blame. Successful therapy for couples depends on openness, accountability, and teamwork.

Lack of Effort Outside of Sessions: The more you practice new skills between sessions, the faster progress happens. Couples who engage actively in their therapy tend to see better and longer-lasting results.
