Questions About Adult Therapy
What can I expect from a therapy consult?
In a therapy consultation, the therapist will ask you to share what has brought you to therapy, the current challenges you are facing, and what you hope to get out of adult therapy. This interactive call is also your chance to ask questions about adult counselling, online therapy, or trauma-informed therapy in Toronto, and to see if the therapist’s style and approach, including the methods they use (e.g., CBT, EMDR, and mindfulness), feels like a good fit. The goal is to get a sense of what working together would be like and whether it feels right for both of you. We invite you to schedule a free consultation to learn more.
What should I expect during my initial session with my therapist?
In your first adult therapy session, one of our therapists will focus on getting to know you; what’s happening in your life right now, the stressors or trauma you’re carrying, and any mental health concerns such as anxiety, PTSD, or ADHD. They’ll also ask about your history to better understand your context, parenting or relationship dynamics, and goals. We do our best to offer at least one tool or strategy you can start using right away, so you leave feeling supported. There will also be time to ask questions and talk about the frequency of sessions and next steps.
What is the cost of a therapy session?
The price for adult sessions varies based on your therapist. For individual pricing we invite you to view our team. Payment can be made by e-transfer or credit card, but we do require a credit card on file in order to book your first session. You will receive a receipt that you can submit to your extended health or employer benefits, if they cover services by a Registered Social Worker (RSW) or Registered Psychotherapist in Ontario, Sask, and Alberta. Sessions are not covered by public healthcare. We always recommend checking with your insurance provider first about coverage for adult counselling.
How long will I be in therapy for?
There is no one-size-fits-all timeline for adult therapy. Some people come for short-term counselling in Toronto to focus on a specific concern like anxiety or a work stressor. Others attend longer-term trauma-informed therapy to process childhood experiences, attachment injuries, or ongoing nervous system dysregulation. We will revisit your goals together and move at a pace that feels manageable for you.
Are your services confidential?
Your privacy is very important to us. The Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers clearly states that information you share in adult therapy is confidential and will not be shared, directly or indirectly, with anyone without your informed consent. There are, however, a few rare exceptions required by law (for example, serious safety concerns), and we will review these limits to confidentiality with you before your first appointment.
We also know how important it is to protect your personal health information. Our online telehealth platform, Jane App, is secure and fully compliant with Canadian mental health and privacy legislation. You can feel confident that your records and session details are safeguarded to the highest standards at every step.
