When the ups and downs of growing up feel like too much

Some days your child or teen looks “fine,” but underneath, they’re anxious, shutting down, or feeling like they don’t fit in anywhere. Maybe they’re having more meltdowns, more conflict at home, more time alone in their room, or they’re harder on themselves than you’d like to admit. School, friendships, family conflicts, grief, social media, it’s a lot for a young heart to hold.

Kids often tell us, “I don’t know why I feel like this,” “I don’t want to worry my parents,” or “I just want someone to listen without judging.”

Child and teen therapy gives them a place to be themselves, feel understood, and get support handling big emotions and the everyday pressures of life.

What Therapy Can Do For Youth

Kids and teens want a few simple, but important things from therapy: a non-judgmental space to open up (even when it’s hard to talk), confidence in who they are, and support for handling school, friends, and family without feeling overwhelmed.

Therapy can help them:

At the Centre for Mind Body Psychotherapy, our child therapists use mind body, trauma-informed, and youth-centred approaches that meet them where they’re at. Teen & child therapy sessions are comfortable, supportive, and focused on what matters most to them.

Challenges We Commonly Support in Child & Teen Therapy

When worries get loud, your child or teen may start avoiding school, friends, or activities. In this case, we teach skills to calm the nervous system manage social anxiety, panic, or OCD, and feel braver in everyday life.

If mood is low, motivation is gone, or they’re saying things like “What’s the point?” We create a safe space to talk, lift shame, improve mood, and build healthier coping tools.

When the past (e.g., abuse or neglect) still feels present in their body, we use trauma-informed approaches like EMDR, IFS, or somatic practices to help those memories feel less scary and help them feel safe and resilient.

If your youth is using substances, food or technology to cope, we help them understand what’s driving it, meet underlying needs in healthier ways.

When your child doesn’t feel good enough or doesn’t know where they fit in, we help youth explore who they are, quiet the inner critic, and build a sense of self-compassion.

When appearance worries or body-based coping — including eating, restriction, exercise, or other patterns — become ways of coping, we help youth understand what’s underneath, meet underlying needs, and build healthier relationships with their minds and bodies.

We help youth communicate more clearly, set healthy boundaries, and cope with breakups, bullying, or family conflict when tension rises at home, school, or community.

Big feelings can come out as yelling, slamming doors, talking back, or aggression. We work on emotion regulation and exploring what lies beneath the behaviour, and help meet underlying needs.

This approach offers education and tools to support learning and school demands, executive functioning (focus, organization, planning), emotional regulation, sensory needs, and social challenges (with communication, social cues, and masking).

Changes like a new school or parents going through a separation or divorce can shake their sense of security. We help them understand what’s happening, express their emotions, and adapt to new relationships and routines.

Mind Body Approaches in Child & Teen Therapy That Support Real Change

We know that kids and teens don’t just think their feelings; they feel them in their bodies, too. That’s why we use holistic, skill-based approaches that support regulation, self-understanding, confidence, healthy relationships, and thriving as they grow.

EMDR helps process scary or overwhelming experiences so memories feel lighter and less in control.

IFS helps youth get to know and care for the different “parts” inside them — like the anxious or self-critical part.

CBT teaches how thoughts, feelings, and actions connect, and supports more balanced and healthier ways of thinking and behaving.

DBT builds skills for managing big emotions, coping with stress, and developing mindfulness.

This method offers tools for focus, planning, and regulation for youth with ADHD or autism.

This approach helps youth ease body activation, slow emotional reactivity and live more in the moment

Somatic therapy helps youth notice and work with how stress shows up in the body — whether as tension, reactivity, or shutdown — supporting a greater sense of calm, grounding, and safety.

Questions About Child & Teen Therapy

Sessions are 55 minutes and cost $200. We offer child and teen therapy virtually across Ontario, Sask, Alberta, and Quebec. Many families use extended health benefits or insurance to help cover counselling with a Registered Social Worker or Registered Psychotherapist. Receipts are provided for reimbursement.

Everyone has ups and downs: stress before a test, friendship drama, bad days at home. That’s normal. But if what your teen is feeling isn’t going away, is getting stronger, or is starting to affect school, friends, sleep, or family life, virtual child & teen therapy in Toronto, and across Sask, Alberta, Quebec, and Ontario can help. If your child is crying a lot, worrying all the time, feeling numb or hopeless, or just not like themselves, that’s usually a sign it’s more than “typical teen.” Even asking this question is a good first step.

Therapy is your child’s time. In teen and child counselling, they can talk about what’s been bothering them, learn ways to handle big emotions, and get support from someone outside their family. Sometimes we talk, sometimes we use journaling, drawing, mindfulness, or body-based coping tools, whatever fits your child’s needs. If talking is hard, we go slower. Nothing is forced, and the teen or child therapist in Toronto will help them figure out what they need each week.

No. What a child or teen shares in therapy is private, with a few important safety exceptions. In Ontario, confidentiality is based on whether the child understands therapy, not just their age. The therapist won’t tell the parents everything the child says unless there is a safety concern (that is, if the child is at risk of hurting themselves or someone else, or they are being harmed). Sometimes we share general updates to help things go better at home, but a child’s stories stay theirs. Therapy is meant to be their space.

Yes. Research shows that child & teen therapy works, but honestly, what matters most are the real stories teens share, like “I actually can handle things better now” or “I like talking to somebody who really listens. Therapy gives your child the tools and support so life feels easier to handle. Over time, you may notice:

  • They emotions don’t control you as much
  • They get along better with friends or family
  • They feel more confident in who you are
  • School and life feel lighter, with more good days than bad

It takes time, but it works, especially when sessions are consistent and your child is committed.

The Growth We Often See After Child & Teen Therapy

Reaching out for support is a sign you care about your child’s well-being. When kids and teens learn what’s happening in their minds and bodies, it becomes easier for them to choose a different response.

With steady therapy, practice, and support at home, over time, children and teens often notice:

"Anything that's mentionable is human, and anything that's mentionable can be more manageable. When we talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary."
